La Porte County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Fatal Accident

A Valparaiso man lost his life in a Saturday afternoon crash at the intersection of U.S. 421 and U.S. 6 at the south junction in La Porte County.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Department deputies say a 1993 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 58-year-old Matthew W. Spicker of Valparaiso was traveling westbound on U.S. 6 just after 4 p.m. CT when he reportedly failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the intersection. Spicker’s motorcycle collided with a southbound van at the driver’s side rear sliding door, according to the report.  The van was driven by 37-year-old Samantha Kaiser of Wanatah on U.S. 421.

Police noted that traffic going northbound and southbound is not required to stop at that intersection.

Police say Spicker was transported to an area hospital for treatment, but later passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.

Kaiser and two passengers in her vehicle were transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Toxicology test results are pending.  The crash remains under investigation.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Westville Police Department, La Porte County EMS, La Porte County Coroner’s Office, and Westville and Cass-Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Departments.
