Democratic Precinct Committeemen in Starke County unanimously voted Thomas Schouten into the Starke County Surveyor’s position during a Democratic Caucus held Monday night at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.
Schouten replaces Bill Crase who recently stepped down from the position.
There were 17 of the 21 Precinct Committeemen available to vote during the caucus which provided a quorum for voting.
Schouten was the only qualified candidate who filed the necessary paperwork with Starke County Clerk Bernadette Welter Manuel and Democrat Chairman Dennis Estok prior to Monday night’s caucus.
Schouten spoke to those in attendance where he stated he would do the job to the best of his ability. Chairman Estok said Schouten is well educated and served 25 years in the United States Army.
He will now need to be sworn into office before he officially begins his duties as Starke County Surveyor. He hopes to have all procedures complete by Monday so he can start work for the county.
