September is Hunger Action Month.
According to Feeding America and the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, 91,060 neighbors in northern Indiana are food insecure including 31,460 children.
To help, officials from the Food Bank of Northern Indiana suggest that residents learn how to help end hunger. Visit feedindiana.org to learn about programs that benefit hungry neighbors in Elkhart, Kosciusko, La Porte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties.
Every community in northern Indiana has people who are in need of extra support keeping food on the table.
According to Community Services of Starke County Executive Director Cindy Benke, during the month of July, Community Services of Starke County did not receive a truck from the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. Only two pallets were received instead of the normal four to six pallets for the months of August and September. Officials there are trying to plan ahead and stretch resources as much as possible, especially with the upcoming holiday season.
The current needs at the food pantry are boxed dinner meals (any variety), rice, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables (any variety), household cleaners, personal care items, paper towels and toilet paper. Any monetary donations are welcome.
