Fire Departments Battle Structure Fire in Washington Township

Twelve fire departments were on hand to battle a large house fire in the 0500 block of State Road 23 in Washington Township in Starke County Monday, January 30.

Washington Township Fire Chief Rick Clark told WKVI News that the Indiana State Fire Marshal was at the scene Tuesday morning.  The cause and origin will be determined as the investigation continues. 

Firefighters from the Washington Township Fire Department were called to the scene a few minutes after 4 p.m. CT and were at the scene for about four hours.  To keep up with water supply, the Koontz Lake-Oregon Township Fire Department assisted, along with Hamlet-Davis Township, Knox-Center Township, Bass Lake-California Township, North Judson-Wayne Township, Polk Township, North Liberty, Culver-Union Township, Plymouth, LaPaz-North Township, and Southwest 42 Fire Departments.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police helped direct traffic and Indiana Department of Transportation snow plows were called to make sure the road was treated for ice after the scene was cleared.  Starke County EMS was also present. 

There were no injuries.  There was no one home at the time of the fire.
