Charges have been filed in a February 26, 2023 injury accident in the 3000 North block of U.S. 35 in La Porte County.
Police from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department say the initial investigation revealed that Dawn Coleman had been operating a tan 2000 Chevrolet southbound on U.S. 35 that traveled off the west side of the road and collided with two trees prior to coming to rest in a wooded area.
As a result, the front seat adult passenger was critically injured and Coleman’s 7-year-old daughter later died of injuries sustained in the accident at a local hospital, according to the report.
An investigation took place where detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division conducted follow-up interviews and looked into the circumstances of the crash. The information gathered was presented to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Police say probable cause was later found and Dawn Coleman has been charged with three counts of operating while intoxicated as a Level 4 Felony, one count of operating while intoxicated as a Level 5 Felony, and operating while intoxicated as a Level 6 Felony. A summons has been issued for Coleman to appear in La Porte Circuit Court Friday, March 31 at 8:30 a.m. CT for an initial hearing on the charges.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
