The Winamac Memorial Swinging Bridge is now back open to foot traffic after ongoing renovations.
The bridge has been re-decked and painting is still in the process, but park visitors can now enjoy the bridge once again.
While updates and repairs were being made, damage to the barricades on both ends of the bridge occurred. New cameras with a 360° rotation are now being considered for purchase and installation to help prevent any possible vandalism.
Plans are still in place to add thousands of waterproof LED lights to the suspender cables, towers and under the walkway of Memorial Bridge, along with a computer system to control the timing and colors of the lights. They are likely to be installed in May.
The Memorial Swinging Bridge is one of 12 suspension bridges in the state of Indiana, the third oldest that remains in use, and the only one in national and international databases to cross the Tippecanoe River. In 1923, the Memorial Swinging Bridge was dedicated to soldiers and sailors from Pulaski County. A 100-year celebration is planned for July 3, 2023.
