Access to nutritious food can have a significant impact on individuals’ overall health and wellbeing.  According to Feeding America, 3,300 Starke County residents were “food insecure” or struggling to put food on the table in 2020, the most recent available data.

To help address hunger in the area and advance our purpose of helping people get well and live healthier, we Northwest Health – Starke collected more than 300 jars of peanut butter during its Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive in March.

All of that peanut butter was then donated to Community Services of Starke County.

Why Peanut Butter? Peanut butter is one of the most requested items for food banks nationwide because it is highly nutritious and has a long shelf life. Unfortunately, most food banks report it is also one of the least donated food items.

“Our team members at the hospital generously supported this initiative to support the health of vulnerable families in our community.”  said Keith Nichols, chief executive officer at Northwest Health – La Porte and Northwest Health – Starke. “They enjoyed reaching beyond the good work they do in the hospital to benefit the mission of Community Services of Starke County.”
