A two-vehicle accident in La Porte County Saturday, April 29 resulted in the death of a driver.
La Porte County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the scene in the area of U.S. 35 and County Road 400 North shortly before 1:30 a.m. CT. Police say a silver 2006 Chevrolet was traveling north on U.S. 35 and a silver 2005 Chrysler, driven by 37-year-old Keith Baker of La Porte, was traveling southbound on U.S. 35 when one of the vehicles crossed the double yellow center lines, resulting in a head-on crash.
After impact, the Chevrolet passenger vehicle became engulfed in flames. The driver of that vehicle, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baker was severely injured and was later airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment.
Members of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) were activated and responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Toxicology test results are pending. No further information is being released at this time.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the La Porte City Police Department, Center and Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Departments, La Porte County EMS, Memorial Medflight, and Cloverleaf Garage.
