Fire Departments Busy with Brush Fires

Dry conditions and nice yard work weather last week and into the weekend led to several brush fire calls.

The Koontz Lake-Oregon Township Fire Department was called to 11580 E. 400 N. for a woods fire Friday, April 14 just before noon CT.  Fire Chief Andy Lawrence told WKVI News that when they arrived on scene about a half acre of woods was on fire and a 10X20 garage burning.  He said the fire was started by a burning pile.  Due to lack of manpower, mutual aid was given by Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department, Walkerton Fire Department, Polk Township Fire Department and Knox-Center Township Fire Department.  The North Liberty Fire Department was on standby.

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours and then they responded to a two-acre woods fire in the Washington Township jurisdiction.

No injuries were reported.

Several other brush fire calls were called in over the weekend in Starke County.
