The Veterans Memorial Swinging Bridge in Winamac has undergone several renovations as of late to improve the structure and to ready it for a giant celebration July 3.
Winamac Town Manager Brad Zellers noted that the lighting system is anticipated to be installed this week.
An earlier fundraising campaign was successful in raising $300,000 for the Memorial Swinging Bridge lighting project.
The project includes in the installation of thousands of waterproof LED lights to the suspender cables, towers and under the walkway of Memorial Bridge, along with a computer system to control the timing and colors of the lights.
The Memorial Swinging Bridge is one of 12 suspension bridges in the state of Indiana, the third oldest that remains in use, and the only one in national and international databases to cross the Tippecanoe River. In 1923, the Memorial Swinging Bridge was dedicated to soldiers and sailors from Pulaski County.
The bridge’s centennial celebration is scheduled in the Winamac Town Park Monday, July 3 starting at 4 p.m. ET.
Food vendors and live bands will be on hand while a youth baseball and softball game will be held at 5:30 p.m. ET. A patriotic lighting ceremony will also be part of the festivities. More information can be found on the Memorial Swinging Bridge Facebook page.
