Two Trucks Collide on U.S. 30, No Injuries Reported

A Wednesday morning accident in Starke County involving two trucks resulted in no injuries.

The Starke County Dispatch Center was notified of the crash around 9:30 a.m. CT by the Grovertown Truck Stop in the 10,000 block of U.S. 30.

According to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, a 2018 F-650 driven by Derrick Johnson, of Gary, began to merge from the outside lane of U.S. 30 to the inside lane to make a left turn into the center median.  At the same time, police say a 2014 Peterbilt semi hauling an empty trailer had been traveling in the inside westbound lane as Johnson began to cross into the inside westbound lane in front of the semi, according to the report. Police say the semi driver attempted to stop by applying the brakes, but the front of the semi struck the driver’s side of the Ford, causing the Ford to spin around and overturn in the median. Johnson’s vehicle came to rest on the driver’s side.  The Peterbilt came to a stop in the median.

Police say the two drivers were already out of the vehicles when emergency responders arrived at the scene.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Hamlet Police Department, Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Department, Starke County EMS, and La Porte County HAZMAT.
