The Prairie Trails Club has received funding that will provide for a major portion of a 20 percent grant match toward an upcoming project.

Starke County Community Foundation Director of Development Jacque Ryan delivered a $25,600 check from the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. Support came from the Wozniak Family Fund, the Verhagen Family Fund, 1st Source Fund, and the Hardesty Memorial Fund.  The funding will be used toward the grant match for an Indiana Trails Program grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The grant funding would extend the existing trail through North Judson, as the Erie Trail, and going northwest, as the Grand Kankakee Marsh Trail.  The trail extension would also host the Great American Rail Trail, American Discovery Trail, and US Bike Route 35.  During their recent meeting, Prairie Trails Club participation was outlined for a Next Level Trails, Stage 4, grant application made earlier this month by the Town of LaCrosse for these same transAmerican routes north of the Kankakee River.  An official from Hebron reported upon an initiative farther northwest in Porter and Lake Counties that would also advance development of the Great American and American Discovery Trails.
