Starke County Highway Department Discusses Work at Johnson Subdivision

The Starke County Commissioners heard from Starke County Highway Department Superintendent Dan Dipert last week who discussed the Johnson Subdivision.

The Johnson Subdivision is on 500 East between John Street and State Road 8 on the east side on the road, in the two-mile jurisdiction.  Dipert said the county was going to use cold mix to pave the area, but upon further research there is a City of Knox subdivision specification that needs to be followed which calls for hot mix asphalt.

The 3,000 foot roadway was dedicated to the county in 2007 before it was built.

Dipert said six inches of No. 53 stone will be need to be put down, along with 2.5 inches of binder with 1.5 inches of surface material as part of the procedure.  The material cost was estimated at a cost of $165,000.

County Attorney Justin Schramm said an agreement will be drafted between the City of Knox and Starke County that would lift liability of the city pertaining to the paving project.  It is the anticipation that the City of Knox would waive the inspection as long as the county adheres to the subdivision specifications, which Dipert said would be done.

The commissioners agreed to move forward with the project and with the drafting of the agreement.  Dipert said it is the hope that the construction will start at the end of the month.
