Two people were injured in an accident that occurred Thursday, August 24 just after 5 p.m. CT at the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 23 in Starke County.
According to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, a green 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by 25-year-old Dana Bond of Mishawaka was traveling south on State Road 23. When she approached the intersection with U.S. 30 she began crossing the westbound lanes when her vehicle struck a blue 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by 49-year-old Michael Hackleman of La Porte, according to the report.
After the initial impact, police say Hackleman’s vehicle caught fire and struck two road signs in the median before coming to a stop.
Bond was airlifted from the scene while Hackleman was transported to an area hospital for injuries in the accident. A passenger in Bond’s vehicle, 28-year-old Danny Whitesell Jr. of Knox, left the scene on foot. Police say all involved were conscious and alert following the crash.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Starke County EMS, Lutheran Air, Hamlet Police Department, Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department, and Howard and Sons Towing.
