The Culver Community School Board members heard a presentation Monday night from Megan Hiatt who is the co-founder of SuperCavs.
Hiatt explained that SuperCavs is a Culver Elementary School PTO safety and community involvement organization.
Hiatt stated, “The SuperCavs program has two goals. The first is to increase the safety of the Culver Elementary campus, specifically focused on the prevention of a mass casualty event. The second is to help foster a greater sense of community among parents, staff and the kiddos we serve.”
She went on to say that a few parents come to the school on a voluntary basis to help Elementary School students with opening milk cartons and assisting with breakfast and then when the bell rings they do a loop around the school to ensure all of the exterior doors are locked.
They report anything to administrators that can pose a safety risk to the students.
The volunteers have reported a few issues over the past two school years since the inception of SuperCavs and those issues have been addressed and resolved.
Hiatt pointed to an interior security issue that poses a risk, which will not be reported in this article with the respect to student safety, and Superintendent Karen Shuman said a remedy will be researched.
School Board member Teresa Thompson asked if the SuperCavs will expand to the Middle/High School and Hiatt indicated that the possible expansion will be considered.
The board members thanked Hiatt for her presentation and the effort of the SuperCavs to keep the Elementary School campus safe.
