The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department investigated an accident Thursday, October 26 that claimed the life of a La Porte teen.
Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 6 and County Road 425 West where they were advised that a commercial motor vehicle and a pickup truck were involved in an accident.
Police say a 2019 Freightliner, driven by 70-year-old Donald E. Miles of Hobart, was traveling on U.S. 6 and then slowed to turn north onto County Road 425 West. As the semi began completing the turn, the driver failed to yield to a vehicle traveling west on U.S. 6, according to the report. As a result, a gold 1996 Ford pickup truck, driven by 16-year-old Mark A. Steuer of La Porte, crashed into the trailer being pulled by the semi.
Steuer was extricated from the pickup truck and transported to an area hospital where he later passed way in the emergency room.
Miles was not injured in the crash.
Toxicology test results are pending. The crash investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Noble and Scipio Township Volunteer Fire Departments, La Porte County EMS and John’s Garage.
