The Knox Board of Public Works discussed purchasing new equipment for the Knox-Center Township Fire Department during their meeting Wednesday.

Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost stated the department’s current extrication equipment is long overdue for an upgrade. He stated the extrication equipment being used is from the 1980’s. He said long hydraulic hoses are used to operate the machinery that connects back to the fire truck in order for the hydraulics to work. He added the department currently has been spending $1,500 annually for upkeep on the hydraulics used within the old extrication equipment.

Pfost went on to say the department has had demonstrations with three separate brands of extrication devices. He stated Holmatro was found to be the more superior brand when it came to extrication equipment. He added these newer devices by Holmatro are able to cut through modern steel being used in today’s vehicles which result in faster extrication. He said the department would like to purchase one cutter, one spreader and two rams that are all battery powered. Pfost said this would eliminate the use of long hydraulics hoses and help the department in terms of moving freely when at an accident.

The total price of the new extrication equipment from Holmatro was quoted at $74,640.19 for the three pieces of equipment as well as batteries, charger and mounting equipment. A motion was made to approve the purchase from Holmatro. That motion was seconded and passed unanimously by vote.
