A La Porte man was arrested Sunday, February 25 after the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into a case of battery.
A deputy was dispatched to a residence located in the 7700 South block of U.S. 35 just after 5 a.m. CT in reference to an alleged disturbance/battery that had just occurred.
Police say the reporting person, 35-year-old Matthew I. Castaneda, stated he battered the homeowner with a baseball bat. He was taken into custody upon the arrival of police.
Further investigation found that the victim had upper body injuries, including a stab wound, according to the report. The victim was transported to a regional hospital for treatment.
Detectives presented charging information and an Affidavit of Probable Cause to the La Porte Circuit Court Monday, Feb. 26. As a result, Castaneda was charged with a Level 3 Felony count of aggravated battery. He remains housed in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $25,005 cash bond through Circuit Court.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
