The Winamac Town Council members voted to approve an ordinance this week that pertains to the fees for trash collection for residential and commercial customers.
The town recently approved a a new trash collection contract with On Point Trash Service out of Logansport for $154,800 each year for five years. In order to ensure that the service be self-sustaining, the collection of fees to residential and commercial customers will increase to $10.75 to help defray the costs of providing the service, per the ordinance.
If payment of fees is not paid on or before the 15th day of the month, a 10 percent penalty shall be applied.
A public hearing was held Monday night to gather comments on the proposed increase, but no public comment was offered.
The council then proceeded to approve the ordinance as advertised.
Town Manager Brad Zellers said the new trash collection contract begins March 1. It is the plan that when the trash is collected February 26, the toters from Waste Management will be collected and new toters from On Point Trash Service will be delivered. Zellers said the transition is expected to be done in the same day.
