Hamlet Town Council Holds Public Hearing on Proposed Water Project

The Hamlet Town Council members opened a public hearing during their meeting Wednesday, February 28 to gather comments on a Preliminary Engineering Report to obtain assistance from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program.

According to Stu Savka from Triad Associates, Inc., a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) has been prepared for the Town of Hamlet to submit to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as a requirement of the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan program.

The PER provides information necessary for IDEM to determine the technical, economic, and environmental adequacy of the proposed improvements.

The project scope is to replace and loop aged and undersized mains, hydrants, and valves in selected areas, replace water meters, and provide better backup power to the treatment plant.

The estimated project cost is $2.2 million dollars.

The project will be funded using a loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan program. Additionally, the Town will be applying for a grant, between $600,000 to $700,000, from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs and also applying for a grant and/or low interest rate loan from the Indiana State Revolving Loan Fund.

Hamlet Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts said a resident asked if the project had anything to do with the water tower west of town near U.S. 35 and the project has nothing to do with that.

There were no other public comments.
