New York Man Arrested after Pursuit in La Porte County

A New York man was arrested Sunday, March 17 after a motor vehicle pursuit with La Porte County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Police say at 1:19 p.m. CT, a deputy began traveling behind an eastbound passenger vehicle on U.S. 20 in the 4200 East block and found the vehicle to be traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the 5300 East block, but the vehicle continued traveling eastbound resulting in a pursuit.

The vehicle continued east and onto State Road 2. The pursuit continued into St. Joseph County. The vehicle ran over a set of tire deflation devices that were placed on State Road 2, thus terminating the pursuit.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Qihui Sun, of Queens, New York, was assisted from the vehicle and taken into custody and transported to the La Porte County Jail.

He was arrested and booked into the La Porte County Jail on a preliminary Level 6 Felony charge of resisting law enforcement. He later posted a La Porte County Circuit Court bond and was released from the jail.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Indiana State Police.

Formal charges will be determined by the La Porte County Prosecutor’s Office.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
