Starke County Sheriff Jack Rosa recently announced that deputies and jail officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, and representatives from Starke County Community Corrections trained for the first time conducting real world scenarios on the ViTra Simulator at the MAAC Center located in Valparaiso March 8 and March 15.
According to the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, this training was an active shooter interactive scenario that included de-escalation skills such as effective communication, utilizing tasers, pepper spray, and a handgun, when appropriate, with the purpose of protecting the community.
One outcome from the scenario was that the use of force is not always needed and that officers can do due diligence to communicate in a crisis whether out in the public or in the jail. This interactive training will be added to annual training mandates.
Also present during the training were Starke County Commissioner Don Binkley, Starke County Councilman Tony Black and Starke County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Poulos.
