Area Fire Departments Respond to Brush Fires

Area firefighters have been busy responding to reports of brush fires as the weather begins to warm up this spring.

North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Chief Todd Jackson told WKVI News that firefighters responded to a woods fire near the intersection of 350 W. and 400 S. over the weekend. Several structures were nearby, but a quick response by the firefighters prevented any damage to the structures.

A brush fire Monday afternoon in the Washington Township Fire Department response area spread to a shed which was destroyed by the fire.

No injuries were reported.

As the weather continues to transition into warmer temperatures and the desire to clean up last year’s leaves and brush, firefighters remind residents to be cautious of the wind direction and nearby structures. Never leave any fire unattended and have control measures available such as rakes, shovels and a water source. If a landowner is going to have a larger controlled burn, call the Starke County Sheriff’s Office at 574-772-3771 to report a controlled burn.
