Arrest Made in U.S. 6 Hit and Run Fatality Accident

An arrest has been made in the April 22 death of a man who was struck by a vehicle 11800 West block of U.S. 6 in La Porte County.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, the decedent, Keith A. Eastwood, was struck by a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Troy L. Slack at approximately 6 a.m. CT and left the scene. Police say Eastwood was found by a citizen who had been traveling along U.S. 6 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and members of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) responded to the scene and launched a major investigation into the fatality hit and run crash.

Significant evidence from the involved vehicle was recovered at the scene. The same evidence assisted and narrowed the search by color, approximate year, and manufacturer for a suspect vehicle. Detectives identified a suspect vehicle in the Flock Safety camera database that had been traveling on U.S. 6 during the timeframe of when the crash occurred.

The suspect vehicle was located Tuesday, April 23 in the 700 block of Capital Road in Porter County.

Slack was taken into custody at the residence and transported to the Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle was impounded from the property and transported to a secure facility.

A probable cause affidavit was prepared and presented to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and later to La Porte County Circuit Court. An arrest warrant was issued for Slack Wednesday, April 24 for the offense of leaving the scene – causing death, a Level 4 Felony.

Slack remains housed in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $20,000 cash-only bond through Circuit Court.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
