Starke County Sheriff’s Office to Participate in Drug Take Back Day

The Starke County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Hub Coalition Starke County, is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Administration for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, April 27.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Office and the San Pierre Fire Department will be host sites for the collection of unwanted or expired medications. Tablets will be collected, as well as capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs with no questions asked.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT Saturday, April 27 prescription drugs will be collected at the Starke County Justice Center at 5435 E. State Road 8 in Knox, and at the San Pierre Fire Department at 102 S. Fisher Street in San Pierre.

Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
