La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputies, Emergency Personnel Respond to Two Fatal Crashes

La Porte County Sheriff’s Department deputies and emergency responders were called to two fatality accidents Sunday, May 19.

Deputies responded to the 3400 N. block of U.S. 35 at 1:10 p.m. CT after receiving notice of a motorcycle crash with injuries. The initial investigation found that a green 2012 Can-Am Spyder motorcycle was traveling northwest on U.S. 35 and for an unknown reason, the motorcycle traveled across a lawn and collided with a tree and landscaping, according to the report. Police say it continued to travel off the roadway and crashed into some boulders before coming to rest in a vegetable garden.

Both occupants of the motorcycle were ejected.

The driver, 58-year-old Steven A. Dabney of Kingsford Heights, was transported by ground from the scene and later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The passenger, 59-year-old Anna M. Thomas of Kingsford Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

Toxicology tests are pending.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Trail Creek Police Department, La Porte County EMS, La Porte County Coroner’s Office, and Center and Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Departments.

At almost 2 p.m. CT, deputies and emergency responders were called to the 8300 W. block of County Road 400 N. for a two-vehicle crash.

The initial on-scene investigation shows that a black 2016 Audi, driven by 74-year-old Cynthia L. Schoof of La Porte, had been traveling east on County Road 400 N. when police say it traveled left of center and into the westbound lane of travel. A blue 2021 Subaru, driven by 68-year-old Susan Hall of La Porte, was traveling west at the time and the two vehicles collided, according to the report.

A passenger of the Audi, 75-year-old Jackie Frankowski of La Porte, sustained an upper body injury, while a passenger of the Subaru, 92-year-old Carol Lukes of La Porte, sustained an upper body injury. Both were transported by ambulance to an area hospital. Lukes later passed away from her injuries at a regional hospital.
