Two people lost their lives in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Joliet Road and County Road 900 West Saturday, May 25 in La Porte County.
Police say a black 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer pulling a U-Haul trailer was traveling south on County Road 900 West. A red 2011 Ford F250 pickup truck was traveling east on Joliet Road. The southbound Chevrolet reportedly disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and the eastbound Ford collided with the Chevrolet in the intersection.
The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as 41-year-old Luis De Leon Muniz of Justice, Illinois. The driver of the Ford was identified as 47-year-old Casey L. Krivak of La Porte. Both drivers sustained upper body injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
Riding in the Chevrolet with De Leon Muniz were four passengers all from Justice, Illinois. Norma Atempa, 36, sustained an upper body injury and was transported by ground to an area hospital. A 16-year-old female also sustained an upper body injury and was transported by air to a regional hospital. An 11-year-old male and a 4-year-old female were pronounced dead at the scene.
Toxicology tests results are pending and no further information is available for release.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Westville Police Department, La Porte County EMS, Lutheran Air, La Porte County Coroner’s Office, and Westville Volunteer Fire Department.
