La Porte Man Arrested Following Fatality Accident

A La Porte man was arrested Monday, June 3 after an investigation into a fatality accident at 8:50 p.m. CT in the area of State Road 2 and County Road 150 East in La Porte County.

Police say a silver 2006 GMC SUV, driven by 32-year-old Angel Almaraz of La Porte, was traveling east on State Road 2 behind a 2012 Honda motorcycle operated by 82-year-old Larry Cummings of Fort Myers, Florida. While they were traveling on State Road 2, Almaraz’s vehicle crashed into the rear of the motorcycle, according to the report.

Cummings, along with passenger 73-year-old Cheryl Skidmore of Fort Myers, Florida, were ejected from the motorcycle and they both sustained upper body injuries. Skidmore was flown from the scene to a regional hospital for treatment, while Cummings was transported by ground to an area hospital for treatment.

Almaraz was not injured. Police say Almaraz exhibited indicators of impairment and was taken into custody at the scene.


Members from the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit were activated and responded to assist with the crash investigation.

Deputies later learned Skidmore died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by La Porte County EMS, Kankakee Volunteer Fire Department, Lutheran Air, and St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office.

Almaraz was transported to the La Porte County Jail and was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing severe bodily injury with a prior conviction, and never receiving a license. He is being held on a $20,305 cash-only bond through La Porte County Circuit Court.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
