North Judson Utility Superintendent Kim Kapp gave an update to the town council members on operations in her department during the Monday, August 5 meeting.
She said a lot of effort was made to clean up after the storms in mid-July and workers have been working to keep up with mowing. While there is a new employee training in the department, the department has been operating without a full staff for some time. Kapp noted that it has been a challenge this year to keep on top of things, but they are doing what they can.
They were commended for their efforts in working to get the brush picked up after the mid-July storm while focusing on other regular everyday duties.
Councilman Josh Brown asked about getting quotes from an outside company to help with mowing the parks and other locations to help the department. Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe said a seasonal employee could be hired for that type of work, and they will look at costs for both options.
There were some questions about mosquito spraying. Kapp said there are specific conditions that need to be met in order to spray for mosquitoes. The wind has to be below 10 mph and temperatures need to be between 60 and 80 degrees after sunset, as required by the Indiana State Chemist. It cannot be raining and there needs to be low humidity. At this time, Kapp is the only employee certified to spray for mosquitoes. Another employee is working on getting the requirements needed to be able to spray for mosquitoes.
Among the purchase orders unanimously approved, the council approved the purchase of 215 new meters so they can be changed out at a cost of $59,125.
