Pulaski County Health Officials Warn of West Nile Virus Detected in Pulaski County

Officials from the Pulaski County Health Department are alerting the public to a case of West Nile virus in Winamac. The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, has been confirmed in Winamac and health officials are taking immediate action to address the situation and protect public health.

West Nile virus can cause a range of symptoms from mild flu-like illness to severe neurological disease. Most people infected with the virus experience no symptoms, but those who do may suffer from fever, headache, body aches, and occasionally more severe symptoms such as encephalitis or meningitis. If symptoms develop, seek medical attention promptly.

One positive case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Winamac.

Officials urge prevention against West Nile including the use of insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk. Eliminate standing water around homes, and ensure window and door screens are properly repaired.

Pulaski County is working closely with local vector control agencies to enhance mosquito control measures, including increased spraying in affected areas.
