The shooting range at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in Jasper County will close Oct. 7 for enhancements to improve shooter safety and accessibility.
The updated range, scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2025, will include covered shooting benches, reconditioned berms with ricochet catchers, concrete walkways with accessible sidewalks from the firing lines to the target lines, and accessible vault toilets.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is using a combination of state and federal funding for upgrades to bring the shooting range to ADA standards and increase safety and functionality.
These improvements are partly funded with revenue from the federal Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act, which originated in 1937. Widely supported by hunters and recreational shooters, the act imposes an excise tax on hunting and shooting equipment and allocates that revenue to state fish and wildlife agencies based on the amount of licensed hunters in the state.
