Suspect in Hamlet Home Invasion Case Charged with Murder

Amended charges have been filed in Starke Circuit Court against David Campbell who was arrested in an investigation into a home invasion in Hamlet that occurred Saturday, August 3.

David Campbell is accused of breaking into the home of Hank and Connie Bailey in the 600 block of Starke Street and causing serious bodily injury to both victims. Connie Bailey passed away August 16 and Starke County Prosecutor Leslie Baker told WKVI News the preliminary autopsy report showed that the manner of death was homicide.

Prosecutor Baker filed an amended Criminal Information document in Starke Circuit Court to include a charge of murder. The amended criminal information states that Campbell did kill Connie Bailey while committing or attempting to commit burglary with the intent to commit theft of cell phones and cash from a safe. He is also charged with acts that caused serious bodily injury to Hank and Connie Bailey after breaking into the house.

In addition to a count of murder, Campbell is also charged with two Level 1 Felony counts of burglary, two Level 2 Felony counts of burglary, two Level 3 Felony counts of burglary, two Level 3 Felony counts of aggravated battery, one Level 4 Felony count of burglary, two Level 5 Felony counts of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and two Class A Misdemeanor counts of battery resulting in bodily injury.

Campbell was arrested August 6 at the Red Rock Inn in Plymouth and has pleaded not guilty to charges. He remains incarcerated. Campbell’s trial is set to begin Tuesday, October 8, 2024 in Starke Circuit Court.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
