Officials at the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation addressed a rumor that was brought to their attention about potential violence at Winamac Community High School.
A letter that was issued by Superintendent Dara Chezem, Lt. Ryan Austin SRO, and the Winamac Police Department, indicated that there have not been any threats to the school.
It stated, “The rumors that are circulating are a combination of stories that have gotten out of hand. The safety and security of our students are our top priority. We have spent an extensive amount of time investigating any and all allegations to get to the bottom of these stories. All the information collected has led us to the conclusion that there are not any plans to commit any acts of violence, nor is there any validity to these rumors that are circulating.
“Although we understand the concern of the public, please rest assured the campus of the school is safe.”
Follow-up information provided indicated that the rumors were based on a student who brought in a woodworking tool that was “incorrectly identified as a weapon” which apparently led to more rumors about a potential shooting. The letter issued by the school stressed that law enforcement and school administrators have spent an extensive amount of time investigating all allegations and all information collected has led law enforcement and administration to the conclusion that “there are no plans to commit any acts of violence, nor is there any validity to these rumors that are circulating.”
