Knox Community High School Nominated for Award

Knox Community High School has been nominated for an Elementary and Secondary Education Act Distinguished School Award.

Officials from the Indiana Department of Education visited the school corporation last week to tour the high school and Redskin Academy to get a deeper look into what is making Knox High School succeed.

High School Director of Guidance Sarah Richard said officials take into consideration that the High School is a Title 1 school, demonstrates high academic achievement, meets or exceeds the state determined accountability, and has a 35 percent or higher poverty rate. High School Principal Glenn Barnes added that graduation rate is considered in the qualifications for the award, as well as school achievements with SAT scores, and attendance rates. He commented that the school is solid in all of those points.

Barnes and Superintendent Greg Mikulich expressed their excitement in the honor it brings to all of the corporation for such a nomination.

Barnes said it is a collaborative effort as many different programs are available to support the high school and the students to allow all of the points to add up to this distinction.

Knox school officials will be notified Friday, November 15 if Knox is one of two schools in the state chosen by the Department of Education to move to a nomination spot for the national award.
