Starke County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident Monday, November 4 at 8:38 a.m. CT where preliminary reports indicated the vehicle had overturned in a ditch on State Road 39 just south of State Road 8.
Prior to arrival, information came in reporting all occupants were out of the vehicle; however a 2-month-old infant had been submerged in water for a short period of time and had a small laceration on his head.
Police say the driver, 20-year-old Katelyn Lehmann of Hebron, Indiana, advised deputies she left the roadway after hydroplaning, where the vehicle struck a tree, causing the vehicle to roll over into a water-filled ditch. Lehmann was able to free herself before entering the rear of the vehicle, removing the child from the safety seat, pulling the child to safety where they both were assisted by citizens who stopped to help, according to the report.
Both the driver and child were transported to a local hospital by medics for non-life threatening injuries.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Starke County EMS, Starke County 911 Dispatch, Knox-Center Township Fire Department, and T&T Auto.
