The Starke County Commissioners voted by a majority to impose a moratorium for 12 months on solar projects that have not yet been permitted.
NextEra, Hoosier Solar and Mammoth Solar would be exempt from the moratorium as the companies are in various stages of the permitting process.
The moratorium would allow the Starke County Planning Commission members to review the ordinances, specifically a Battery Energy Storage System ordinance, to amend them as necessary for further consideration by the commissioners once finalized for proposal.
Commission President Don Binkley made the motion with Commissioner Charles Chesak seconding the motion. Binkley and Chesak voted in favor of the motion while Commissioner Mark Gourley voted against the motion.
The matter now goes back to the Starke County Planning Commission.
