Knox Street Department Superintendent Provides 2024 Statistics

Knox Street Department Superintendent Jeff Borg presented the Knox Board of Works and the Knox City Council with his department statistics for 2024 during their meeting Wednesday, January 15.

He discussed mosquito abatement applications and his licensing for the applications throughout the city.

Borg stated that thanks to the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, the city streets are in very good condition. Department crews continue to preserve the condition of the roads.

Over the last few years, the Street Department has changed out all of the street signs.

A severe weather event July 16, 2024 resulted in the pickup of 93 dump truck loads of brush by the department in the span of one week.

Crews have hauled 553 tons of stone to be used for alleys and shoulders of roads, hauled 17 tons of asphalt patch used for road cuts and pothole repairs, taken in 101 tons of road salt, and loaded and hauled 376 dump truck loads of brush plus 75 loads of leaves, mixed grass, and garden vegetation.

From October 7 through December 9, the crews vacuumed a total of 1,117 yards of leaves and 60 yards of leaves in the spring.

This winter has been mild so Borg said crews have been out doing more street sweeping and other maintenance activities. The city has a contract with INDOT to sweep U.S. 35 at a cost of $1,140 for four times a year as the state owns that road. The city does help from time to time.
