Company Looks to Build More Houses in Hamlet

A company has purchased more land in Hamlet in order to produce more housing opportunities.

Hamlet Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts said a company representative was before the council members Wednesday night to discuss plans of building more houses in the area of Jefferson and Railroad south of the tracks around 550 E. The property would eventually be petitioned to be annexed into the town.

Pitts noted that it is a work in progress and more discussions will be held as plans develop.

Additionally, the town will be opening bids for the water project February 20.

The Town of Hamlet was successful in obtaining a grant from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs to conduct updates to the water utility. There are lead lines that need to be replaced as required by the state which will add an estimated $200,000 to the project, depending on how many lines need to be replaced. Beyond that, the entire project includes hydrant and valve replacements, water meters and meter pits, metering system, new standby generator, water main looping, and vac trailer. The project should improve water pressure and water quality for the town residents.
