Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident Sunday, February 2 at about 4:30 p.m. CT in the area of State Road 39 and State Road 8 in Starke County.
Deputies from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene where preliminary reports indicated the vehicle slid off the roadway and into a wetland swamp area, however the vehicle was not submerged.
On arrival, deputies found a single passenger car approximately 100 feet off the roadway. The vehicle was located on top of the frozen wet land area, resting against trees and brush. Knox-Center Township Fire Department personnel were able to remove both occupants from the vehicle, move them over the ice to the road surface where they were loaded into a waiting ambulance. The driver, Halina Pacios, 61, of Knox, and her passenger Leokadia Kolodziej, 91, of Norridge, Illinois, were both transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Other agencies assisting at the scene were Starke County EMS, Starke County 911 Dispatch Center, and good samaritans who stopped to help.
