According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Health, the first 2025 case of measles has been confirmed in Indiana.
The case is an unvaccinated minor located in Allen County, which is in Northeast Indiana. The release states that state and local public health officials are working together on the investigation and to confirm any additional cases. This case is the first measles case in Indiana since early 2024.
According to the press release, the patient is stable and recovering. No further information about the patient will be released to protect privacy.
The Indiana Department of Health would like to remind Hoosiers that because measles is so easily spread, a single case is considered an outbreak. The infection can be spread via droplets from coughing or sneezing. Early symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Tiny white spots ma appear inside the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin.
