The San Pierre Volunteer Fire Department (SPFD) congratulated their newest Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) on Tuesday, stating that the new group of EMR finished their course the previous week, and had passed all of their skills and state tests.
San-Pierre Volunteer Fire Department started this EMR course in February of this year; with students attending classes for around 8-10 hours per week. They met Monday and Thursday evenings, completing a classroom portion of training and learning 7 Indiana-required skills for certification.

The skills learned were:
- Patient Assessment Medical
- Patient Assessment Trauma
- Long Bone Immobilization
- Bleeding Control / Shock Management
- BVM Ventilation of an apneic or non-breathing patient
- Spinal Immobilization
- Cardiac Arrest Management / AED
During the course, students also obtained their CPR/AED Basic Life Support Provider Certifications, and their Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification. Primary Instructor Travis Clary notes that the students worked extremely hard to obtain this certification, and shared, “It is even more impressive that they are all volunteer!”
Students were taught by the aforementioned Mr. Clary, with Samantha Clary and Andrew Wilcox acting as Assistants. Chad and Tammy Schumacher with SPFD also provided help for the course.

At the end of the course, students took and successfully passed a State of Indiana EMR Test that included a practical skills exam as well as a written exam for the State of Indiana Certification.
The new EMR group includes Erica Williams, Fawn Patterson, Kerry Madsen Jr., Michael Wilcox III, Shaun Patterson, and Tiffany Wilcox, all with SPFD; and Nick Dwyer with Bass Lake California Township Fire Department.
Instructor Clary wished to thank the San Pierre Fire Department for hosting the course, and stated that he hoped to do more such courses in the future.
