
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office there was a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US Highway 20 and County Road 300 East in Kankakee Township that resulted in one fatality.
Deputies responded to a call on Thursday, April 3rd at 4:31am for a two-vehicle collision where one vehicle was engulfed in flames. La Porte County Deputy Shanyne Landry arrived on the scene and, with the help of a bystander, attempted to remove the entrapped driver from the vehicle but were ultimately unsuccessful. The driver of the vehicle, 44-year-old Cary C. Canary from La Porte was declared deceased at the scene.
After initial investigation, officials learned that the 2016 Kia that had been operated by Canary was driving south on County Road 300 East when the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign. The vehicle entered the path of a 2016 Freightliner traveling west on Highway 20 that was unable to avoid the collision. The driver of that vehicle was 39-year-old Roman Nichols of Fremont, Indiana.
Toxicology test results were still pending at the time of this release, with no further information available at the time.
