According to a flyer released by Starke County Environmental Management, there will be a residential household hazardous waste collection date this upcoming Saturday, May 10th.
Household hazardous waste will be collected at the Recycle Center in Knox, located at 3835 East 250 North Suite B; from 8:30am to 1pm Central Time.
Household Hazardous Waste are unwanted products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients that require special care upon disposal.
There will be a $20 cost per television set dropped off, but unlimited appliances may be dropped off for free. Computers have a limit of one free monitor to be disposed of, but unlimited CPUs, keyboards, and printers. No narcotics or controlled substances will be accepted, but the flyer notes that those can be disposed of at the County Sheriff’s and Police Department’s drop-off bins. Any other sharps must be in containers.
Other acceptable waste includes oil and oil filters, batteries, mercury items such as thermometers and thermostats, pet spray, dip, and flea collars, poisons, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides; chemicals and ammonia, oil-based paints, solvents, and thinners. The flyer does note that latex paint will not be accepted, as it is not considered hazardous waste. To dispose of latex paint, allow the paint to dry out and dispose of through your regular waste hauler.
This event is for residential households in Starke County and not meant for commercial or industrial waste.
