According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the counties of Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, La Porte, at St. Joseph are under a heat advisory until this evening, 8pm eastern time and 7pm central time, so far.
The National Weather Service may extend the heat advisory on a day-by-day basis.
Heat indices are expected to rise back into the 100 to 105 range today with isolated higher temperatures likely.
According to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Indiana residents can take advantage of cooling centers that will be open across the state for those in need of a safe and cool place to spend time.
Cooling centers are organizations across the state that have reliable air conditioning, sometimes refreshments or water fountains, and are open to the public.
Residents can dial 211 to find a list of nearby cooling centers, or search online.
According to the online database of cooling centers in Indiana, the Starke County Public Library system branches are designated cooling centers, including the Henry F. Schricker branch in Knox, located at 152 West Culver Road; the Hamlet Library, located at 6 North Starke Street; the Koontz Lake Library at 7954 Indiana 23; and the San Pierre Library located at 103 Broadway Street. Additionally, the North Judson Wayne Township Public Library is also a cooling center, located at 208 Keller Avenue. The La Porte County Public Library branches are also designated cooling centers. Located at 108 East West Street in Hanna, 3727 West 800 South in Union Mills, and at 436 Evanston Road in La Porte. Pulaski County Public Library is also offering cooling centers at 121 South Riverside Drive in Winamac.
Residents are urged to visit any of these locations for a cool safe spot to spend some time, especially with extreme summer temperatures expected across the state over the next several days.
