The Town of La Crosse has shared a Public Safety Message for their community.
The message states that the town of La Crosse has received a significant and increasing number of complaints regarding children and teenagers operating dirt bikes, go-karts, and other motorized vehicles on the town’s streets and highways.
The announcement states that this activity is not only a nuisance; it has become increasingly reckless, creating a serious safety hazard for everyone.
They state that their primary concern is preventing a tragedy, and that they care about the safety of young riders, and about the drivers who could find themselves in an accident upon hitting someone.
The message goes on to state that the town is a “See Something, Say Something, Call 911” policy for the issue, effective immediately.
The Town of La Crosse would like community members to know that when they witness children or teenagers operating motorized vehicles recklessly on the town’s streets and highways, to immediately call 911. Provide the dispatcher with the location of the riders. Describe what they are driving and wearing.
The Town of La crosse strongly urges parents to speak with their children about the life-threatening risks of operating these vehicles on public roads.
The town continues, stating that if the problem continues, the Town Council will explore all available options to protect residents, including passing a new ordinance that would make it illegal for any person without a valid driver’s license to operate any motorized vehicle on streets or highways within town limits. The only exception would be for riding lawn mowers being moved directly between job sites. Violators of this ordinance would be subject to fines.
