
LA PORTE COUNTY – According to an announcement shared by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, September 13th; deputies were dispatched on September 12th at 10:19 PM Central Time to the 5700 west block of Schultz Road, reference a single vehicle crash.
The initial on-scene investigation completed by Deputy Austin Wells and assisting deputies determined the following had occurred.
A black 2023 Chevrolet Corvette was traveling eastbound on Schultz Road. The vehicle traveled off the south side of the roadway, struck two trees, a guy wire attached to a utility pole, and a wooden fence before coming to rest in a corn field where it became engulfed in flames.
The driver (lone occupant) of the vehicle was identified as 32-year-old Richard N. Nagy of La Porte. Nagy was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Michigan City Fire Department, Nagy had been a part of their team since 2022.
They shared: “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Firefighter Richard Nagy.
Firefighter Nagy served on the Michigan City Fire Department with honor and dedication since 2022. He passed away while off duty on Friday, September 12th. Nagy was known for his boundless energy, his ever-present smile, and his enthusiasm every day he came to work. To say that he will be missed would be a grave understatement.
Please keep his family, friends, and his brothers and sisters in the fire service in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Memorial arrangements will be shared when finalized and at the request of the family.”
