According to a press release from the Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA, they will once again be hosting their nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day this upcoming Saturday, October 25th.
The program offers the public a safe and convenient way to responsibly dispose of their unused and expired prescription medications. Nationally, the event is set to run from 10am to 2pm.
The purpose of Prescription Drug Take Back Day is to help prevent prescription drug abuse and theft, allowing participants to safely drop off expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs for disposal with no questions asked. Both liquid and pills are accepted, as well as vape pens without batteries and vaping cartridges. The program does not accept any needles or other sharps, new or used.
The DEA states that medications left in home cabinets can easily be misused or stolen, contributing to prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings. Additionally, improper disposal methods, such as flushing medications or throwing them in the trash, can harm the environment.
Residents can find the nearest Indiana State Police Post using the Indiana State Police Map, or locate additional collection sites across Indiana and the U.S. by visiting the DEA’s official website.
According to the DEA’s website, tri-county locations that will be participating in this National Take Back Day include the La Porte Police Department and Michigan City Police Department.
