According to an announcement from the Michigan City Fire Department, the department recently performed a smoke alarm canvas in the area.
The effort saw the fire department partnered with the Northern Indiana Safety Educators Association, the American Red Cross, and Indiana District 1 Firefighter Training Council.
The canvas, which took place this past Saturday morning, resulted in 56 community homes receiving newly installed smoke alarms as well as safety information provided to residents. Volunteers from several local fire departments as well as students from the American Red Cross Chapter at Notre Dame also participated in the effort to build a safer community, one home at a time.
