Both the Starke County Sheriff’s Office and the City of La Porte Police Departments announced yesterday that there is another phone scam circulating across the region.
Callers claim that you have missed jury duty, or that you have an active warrant out for your arrest, and then they demand some kind of payment to “fix” it.
Please be aware: Law enforcement will never call you to demand money, gift cards, or any type of payment, especially to resolve a warrant or criminal charges.
These scam callers rely on a sense of urgency to trick people into making rash decisions in a moment of fear. They can sound very convincing, so double-checking is always the best move. If something feels off, hang up the phone and find the official phone number to the agency in question. Call them directly to verify whether they were reaching out or not.
Again, police departments will not call citizens demanding money, that is a scam phone call.
