With our first snow of the season under our collective belts, now is a practical time to begin thinking about winter driving safety.
Winamac Volunteer Fire Department recently shared some safety notes for driving during snow-covered conditions. Cautious driving during slick conditions can help prevent accidents.
They note that as temperatures drop, tire rubber stiffens and doesn’t “bite” the road as well, which means less grip even on dry pavement, especially first thing in the morning and after sunset.
Because of this, winter drivers should plan for longer stopping distances and give themselves extra room. Remember to slow down earlier for lights and turns, and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering.
Winamac Volunteer Fire Department also recommends keeping extra coats and blankets in your vehicle. They state that if you become stranded or have to wait for a tow, those extra layers can keep you safe and comfortable until help arrives.
Finally, and as always, watch out for crews and other responders. Move over carefully, and give them space to work.
